Welterweight contender Amir Khan struggled mightily to make a decision on which fight he should take between two major offers. Should he take up the challenge against welterweight world titlist and pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford, or should he take on former welterweight titlist and bitter British rival Kell Brook in a fight that has been talked about for years?
In the end, former unified junior welterweight titlist Khan opted to face Crawford, whom he met face to face at a London hotel to formally announce their fight on Tuesday.
Crawford, the former lightweight champion and undisputed junior welterweight world champion, will make his second welterweight title defense against Khan on April 20 in the main event of a Top Rank Boxing card that ESPN will carry on pay-per-view (9 p.m. ET), the first PPV event of the promotional company’s seven-year deal with the network.
The venue has not been determined yet, but Top Rank promoter Bob Arum recently told ESPN that the fight would take place either at Madison Square Garden in New York or at one of the MGM Resorts International arenas in Las Vegas: the MGM Grand Garden Arena, T-Mobile Arena or Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Khan had been far down the road with Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn on a deal to face Brook, who is also with Hearn. When Khan signed with Hearn last January, one of the main reasons was to help facilitate the long-awaited match with Brook.
But Top Rank came to Khan with a strong offer — at least $5 million and the chance to win another world title on a major American pay-per-view — because it needed a name opponent for Crawford to face.
Khan said he struggled with the decision, but ultimately the opportunity to fight one of boxing’s elite fighters won out.
“The decision as to fighting Kell Brook or Crawford has been one of the most difficult decisions of my career to date,” Khan said. “Clearly, the U.K. fans want to see Khan versus Brook, but I could not turn down the opportunity to fight for the WBO title. That is not to say that the Brook fight won’t happen, as I want that fight to happen as soon as possible.
“Fighting a world champion won’t be easy, but this is exactly the challenge I need at this stage of my career. I am fully motivated and ready for the best training camp of my life. Crawford is beatable, and I want that WBO title. It’s going to be one hell of a fight.”
Crawford Vs. Khan: Latest Info On Date, Venue
WBO welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford‘s next opponent will be Amir Khan. It’s not exactly the welterweight fight boxing fans want to see, but it’s better than the bout that Top Rank was initially ready to roll out for Bud.
Crawford and Khan will lock horns on April 20 in the main event of Top Rank Boxing’s first ESPN pay-per-view event. So far, the undercard hasn’t been confirmed, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Shakur Stevenson and perhaps Teofimo Lopez were also in action.
On Tuesday night, we learned the event will take place at the famed Madison Square Garden. The MGM Grand Garden Arena was in the running to host the event, but in the end, MSG won out. Crawford’s guaranteed purse hasn’t been confirmed, but Khan is reportedly set to walk away with at least $5 million. Expect Crawford to earn some percentage of pay-per-view revenue and perhaps other endorsements and incentives.
Khan could have potentially made more if he’d chosen to accept his rival Kell Brook’s challenge. However, instead, the 32-year-old from Bolton elected to take what most would consider a tougher fight against Crawford–one of the sport’s pound-for-pound best. A Khan-Brook bout has been discussed and rumored for years with the two men trading barbs consistently for much of their careers. click for details
Khan – Crawford: Fight 20 April – in New York
Amir Khan has confirmed that he will face American Terence Crawford on April 20 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
After protracted negotiations, with Khan once against edging away from a bout with Kell Brook, Matchroom Boxing and Top Rank officially announced the fight today at a press conference in London.
Crawford, 31, will enter the bout as an overwhelming favourite, having reigned as undisputed champion in the light-welterweight division, before moving up to 147lbs and winning the WBO World Title against Australian Jeff Horn.
“I know this is a dangerous fight and if I switch off I will get hurt – but I can win this fight,” Khan said on Tuesday. “I wouldn’t take this fight [against Crawford] if I didn’t think I could win.”
“I was always chasing that big fight. This in a way, is a fairer fight for me. In my division, he is probably one of the best pound-for-pound fighters out there.
“We tried to make the biggest fights in boxing and obviously it didn’t happen. Look this is the type of fighter I am, I want to be fighting, mixing with the best. I enjoy mixing with the best. Terence is up there with the best.”
“When I got the phone call for this fight, I couldn’t say no to it, because it’s got a world title on the line, an unbeaten fighter. They had Kell Brook there as well, but for me, this is probably globally a bigger fight.” click for details
Khan-Crawford Announcement Coming
With Amir Khan choosing Terence Crawford over Kell Brook, Crawford’s promoter is hoping to have an official announcement by the middle of January.
Speaking with ESPN, Top Rank founder Bob Arum made it clear that “everything looks good” for a Khan-Crawford showdown on April 20th either at Madison Square Garden or in Las Vegas on Pay-Per-View.
Khan was allegedly offered $5 million guaranteed to face Crawford for his welterweight title over facing fellow British boxer Brook, who has been in a back and forth squabble with Khan for a few years.
“New York or Las Vegas — those are the two spots we are talking about. It’s a big fight and Khan and Crawford have lot of people fly to their fights,” Arum said.
“They both have good fan bases, and that’s what a place like Las Vegas looks for — customers to come in and fill the hotel rooms. A place like Madison Square Garden looks to fill the seats and doesn’t care about filling hotel rooms. Wherever, I am very optimistic the fight is going to happen.”
Khan made his comeback to the sport in 2018, first with a statement knockout of Phil Lo Greco less than two minutes into the fight, but would struggle in a decision win over Samuel Vargas, where Khan would be sent to the canvas in the later rounds.
How To Watch Khan vs Crawford Live Online Worldwide?
Amir Khan is set to take on American Terence Crawford in the welterweight fight on Saturday, 20th april 2019 in what should be a cracking fight set to take place at the Madison Square Garden in New York, USA. Sure this was not the fight boxing fans were hoping Terence Crawford will be going for but it still better than Crawford v Collazo which was initial plan for Crawford camp. Crawford will be massive favourite going into the fight and a win will put him right up there with Errol Spence as best welterweights in the division.

This will be a PPV event in the US and Top Ranks fight ever PPV on ESPN which takes place on Saturday night, 20th April 2019 at the Madison Square Garden in New York. Top Rank has also promised a loaded undercard for this one and rightly so they would need couple of decent fights on the card to sell this one as Danny Garcia is also fighting on the same night on other network.
